Winter Skincare Science Overview: Supporting the Skin Barrier

Winter Skincare Science - Supporting the Skin Barrier with Lipids, Antioxidants + Botanical Repair

by Noreen Roman, Founder, New Day Organics

With such a cold winter this season (at least here in the Midwest), I thought we could explore some of the science of winter skincare, why winter is a physiological challenge for skin and include a quick review of a few New Day Organics products we suggest for a tried-and-true Winter Skincare Ritual.

As the temperatures drop and indoor heating rises, our skin experiences considerable and measurable changes with:

  • Increased trans epidermal water loss (TEWL)
  • Decreased stratum corneum lipid production
  • Impaired barrier recovery and repair
  • Higher rates of irritation, inflammation, and rough texture

The result is the ever-familiar winter cycle of dryness, sensitivity, dullness, and discomfort. Fortunately, there is a solution!

Our Approach

At New Day Organics, our approach to care of our winter skin is rooted in skin barrier science: supporting the skin with bioavailable lipids, antioxidant defense, and botanical actives. We intentionally create skincare formulations to support your skin biology with plant-based actives that work in harmony with your skin barrier.

In particular, healthy winter skin requires skincare that will do the following:

  • replenish lipids
  • reduce water loss
  • provide antioxidant protection and
  • include calm, consistent nourishment with botanicals

A Winter Skincare Ritual: Layer to support skin barrier function

Your skin performs best in winter when moisture/hydration is paired with lipid sealing so here is our suggestion for an ideal winter skincare routine.

Morning + Evening Facial Routine – after cleansing, apply:

  1. Essential Facial Cream (barrier restoration + lipid replenishment)
  2. Glow Facial Serum (antioxidant + active botanical support)

Full-Body Winter Protection – post shower, apply:

  1. Whipped Shea Body Butter (deep moisture retention post-shower)
  2. Healing Hands Balm (targeted repair + occlusion)

Recognize and Respond Early

If you notice your skin staying dry, turning red, or flaking, it’s a sign that your skin barrier needs support. Reach for products with botanical butters. Skip harsh exfoliants and stay steady with hydration.

At New Day Organics, we use only safe, whole ingredients that support your skin’s natural defenses. Every formula I develop is evidence-based and extensively researched for natural effectiveness.  Winter may be tough on skin, but you can stay ahead with the right routine.

That wraps it up for now! Join us as we dive deeper into individual ingredients and products in future blogs as a part of this Winter Skincare Series.

With Love and Great Winter Skin,

Noreen
