What Sustainability Really Means in Skincare

Customers today are asking important questions about the products they use every day.

Where do the ingredients come from? How are they grown? How are they processed? What impact do the products from these ingredients have on the environment? Are brands making choices that support both people and the planet?

At New Day Organics, we believe these questions matter.

Sustainability has become one of the most talked-about topics in the beauty industry, but it is often reduced to a single attribute—recyclable packaging, a natural ingredient, or a marketing claim. In reality, true sustainability is much broader, values-driven commitment to responsible practices and decision-making at every each and every stage of a product's journey.

For us, sustainability means creating skincare products that align with our values:  creating healthy skincare you, our valued customers, our communities, and the environment - from ingredient sourcing to the finished product.

Sustainability Begins with the Ingredients

Long before a moisturizer, serum, or body butter reaches your home, the ingredients in your skincare have been cultivated, harvested, processed, and transported through a complex supply chain.

That's why we believe sustainability starts at the source.

At New Day Organics, we prioritize formulating with certified organic and whole, naturally derived ingredients whenever possible and partner with only the most ethical companies to provide those ingredients. Organic agriculture helps reduce reliance on synthetic pesticides, supports healthy soil ecosystems, protects waterways, and promotes biodiversity.

Our beautiful palm oil-free soaps are a great example of conscious ingredient sourcing aligned with our values.  By avoiding palm oil in our soap formulations (and choosing to use only organic and natural oils and butters in all of our soaps), we do not participate in the slash and burn clearing of rainforests, habitat destruction, palm oil mill effluent pollution and a host of other human rights and environmental issues.

Healthy ingredients begin with healthy agricultural practices, and healthy agricultural practices help create a healthier planet for everyone.

Why Organic Matters

Organic farming is about more than avoiding certain chemicals.

It is a holistic approach to agriculture that supports soil health, protects pollinators, encourages biodiversity, and helps preserve natural resources for future generations.

When we choose certified organic ingredients, we are supporting farming practices that align with our commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.

For us, organic skincare is not simply a product category—it is an extension of our values. Is it more expensive to source and purchase certified organic ingredients - absolutely.  Is it worth it for the planet?  Ditto.

Responsible Sourcing and Supplier Partnerships

Sustainability is not achieved by one company acting alone.

Every product depends on a network of farmers, growers, ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, and logistics partners. That is why we carefully evaluate the relationships we build throughout our supply chain with each and every supplier.  We choose to work with supplies who those share our commitment to transparency, environmental responsibility, ethical business practices and fair treatment of workers.

By working with suppliers who share these values, we can help create positive change in the world, beyond the products themselves.

For example, we source our Tunisian Olive wood draining soap dishes directly from a company of artisans in Tunesia who sustainably cut their olive branches (and not the trees) and pay their artisans a fair wage. Likewise, we seek out only the best suppliers for our organic oils and butters and botanicals, ensuring that our organic ingredients are not obtained at a cost to the species of plants or the environment and source Fair Trade ingredients whenever possible.

Thoughtful Formulation Reduces Waste

One aspect of sustainability that our customers rarely see is the one that is woven into the product formulation, itself.

At New Day Organics, we believe effective skincare should be both purposeful and simple. We formulate products with carefully selected organic and natural ingredients that provide meaningful benefits to achieve the end skincare result, without relying on unnecessary fillers or even excessive extracts and actives for the sake of marketing.

Thoughtful formulation helps reduce waste of raw materials and resources while also ensuring that every ingredient serves a purpose!

Our goal is to create products that deliver exceptional skin health & performance while maintaining our commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.

The Challenge of Sustainable Packaging

Yes, packaging remains one of the beauty industry's greatest sustainability challenges. And while there is no perfect solution, but we believe every inch of improvement matters.

That's why we consciously make sustainable packaging decisions:  paper boxes made with Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) paper and printed with vegetable inks, instead of petroleum-based inks.  Our deodorant containers are paperboard push up tubes that are 100% compostable and can be recycled in the waste stream.  We choose glass bottles, aluminum tins and other easily reuseable and recyclable packaging, not because it is less expensive (it's not!), but because it is the right thing to do.

Every year, we take a dedicated time to review and evaluate our packaging options to reduce environmental impact while protecting product stability, safety, and effectiveness. Is there something better that we can use that has a less environmental impact? Uses less fuel to transport?  Sustainability is not about achieving perfection overnight—it is about making better choices whenever possible and continuously seeking opportunities to improve.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Every ingredient harvested, every package produced, and every shipment delivered requires resources and energy.

As a responsible skincare company, we recognize the importance of reducing our environmental footprint wherever possible. This includes evaluating sourcing practices, manufacturing efficiencies, packaging decisions, and transportation considerations.  It's an exhaustive list with a myriad of options, right?

Locally, we ask our customers to return, reuse or recycle our glass bottles and jars.  The ones that are returned to us are washed, sterilized and re-introduced into our manufacturing processes.

And while no company is without environmental impact, we believe transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement are essential parts of building a more sustainable future.

Sustainability and Product Performance Go Hand in Hand

A product that does not perform as promised ultimately creates waste—of ingredients, packaging, transportation, and consumer trust.

That is why we believe sustainability and efficacy should never be viewed as competing priorities: the most responsible skincare products also deliver meaningful results you can see and feel, while respecting both human health and the environment.

Our commitment has always been to create products that are "naturally effective for life" as well as thoughtfully formulated and rooted in organic ingredients.

Our Commitment to Continuous Improvement

At New Day Organics, sustainability is not a trend or a marketing strategy.  It is one of our core values, and one we take very seriously!  It is woven into the fabric of every decision that we make and influences how we source ingredients, choose suppliers, formulate products, evaluate packaging, and operate our business.

We also recognize that sustainability is a journey. No company has all the answers, and there is always more work to be done. We remain committed to learning, improving, and making thoughtful choices that support both our customers and the environment.

Looking Ahead

As stewards of a purpose-drive, organic skincare brand, we believe effective skincare and a healthy planet should never be mutually exclusive.  We have the privilege of working with ingredients that originate directly from our amazing Earth.  But that privilege also comes with a responsibility to protect the natural resources, ecosystems, and communities that make those ingredients possible and available.

So, as we look ahead to the future, we continue our mission to create organic skincare products for healthier skin - all while respecting the communities and ecosystems that make skincare possible. Because true beauty should leave a positive impact—on your skin, your well-being, and the planet we all share.

With love and positive impact,
